On 31 August 1957, the Bombay stock exchange became the first stock exchange to be recognized by the Indian Government under the Securities Contracts Regulation Act. In 1980, the exchange moved to the Phiroze Jeejeebhoy Towers at Dalal Street, Fort area.
In 1986, it developed the Bombay stock exchange SENSEX index, giving the Bombay stock exchange a means to measure overall performance of the exchange.
In the year 2000, the Bombay Stock Exchange used this index to open its derivatives market, trading SENSEX futures contracts. The development of SENSEX options along with equity derivatives followed in 2001 and 2002, expanded the Bombay Stock Exchange’s trading platform. The Bombay Stock Exchange switched to an electronic trading system developed by CMC Ltd in 1995.
It took the exchange only fifty days to make this transition. This automated, screen-based trading platform called BOMBAY STOCK EXCHANGE On- line trading had a capacity of 8 million orders per day.
The Bombay Stock Exchange has also introduced the world’s first centralized exchange-based internet trading system, bsewebx.co.in to enable investors anywhere in the world to trade on the Bombay Stock Exchange platform. The session timings of the Bombay stock exchange are 9 o’ clock in the morning to 9:15 p.m in the night for Pre-open Trading Session and 09:15 pm to 1:30 am in the morning for the post transfer session. The timings for the Closing Session are 17:05 – 17:15 and for the Option Exercise Session it is 17:07.
