How to Mix 3M Bondo

Bondo is a kind of automotive body filler putty. The term “3M” has been bought in use with its name because it is a brand name used by 3M for a line of American made products for automotive, marine and household repairs. This putty is a mix of talc and plastic which can be bought in use as filler putty for wood, concrete and even gold or metal repair.  Now when we have to repair any such area applying it with 3M Bondo putty, we have to follow a schematic approach for mixing and application of this filler putty and if you also wish to apply it somewhere on any surface, the following mixing and application tips can be bought into use:-

1. Making the Mix:-

It is advised that you squeeze out approximately 3 inch ribbon or strip of cream hardener for a 3 inch diameter circle of the filler.  Once you make a mix, color change will be seen and you can easily use this mixture for repairing any concerned area. You should make a mix only on a clean and non-porous surface and you should be careful while making the mix. The mix should not be allowed to stay un-used for long as else it might get spoiled.

2. Protection Measures To be adopted:-

We never need special equipment for eyes and face as a protective measure while preparing the putty but we can wear rubber gloves if we want. Besides this, the exact protection and care is needed by surface where our mixture resides as if it will be porous, there are maximum chances that it will get fixed and settled there.

3. Begin by Cleaning the Area:-

Now our approach in application of 3M bondo putty is to first clean and repair the concerned surface with warm soapy water. Once the area gets cleaned, you can remove paint, primer and other such debris from it using a sand paper. 80 grit sandpaper will suit the best for this purpose. Sandpaper is available for a cheap cost as low as two to five rupees with every paint shop. You can begin by spreading the initial layer of mixed filler over the repair area and you can apply it with firm pressure to ensure maximum adhesion.

4. Cure the Application Filler if needed:-

The application filer should be cured if needed. Though I had advised you to begin with an initial thin layer, but you can make it thick afterwards by applying a few more coats of filler mixture over it. You can use primer, varnish and paint afterwards to cover the putty with it.

5. Read Label Directions for a Better Mix and Application:-

The pack of Bondo putty comes labeled with directions of use and mixing printed over it. You can read these label directions for proper and suitable application of Bondo putty over the surface to be repaired. You can let the putty dry completely afterwards and you can ensure proper temperature and dryness conditions to make the adhesive fix properly.
