How to Express Dog Gland

The anal glands or anal sacs are small glands found near the anus in many mammals, including dogs and cats. They are paired sacs located on either side of the anus between the external and internal sphincter muscles. Sebaceous glands within the lining secrete a liquid that is used for identification of members within a species. Your dog’s anal glands are two grape-shaped glands located just below the anus to either side.

1. Look If There Is Any Anal Injury:-

First of all, I will advise you to look up if there is some case of anal injury related to the dog or not and then you can begin up the further approaches. If there is some anal injury, You will need to take the dog to some animal hospital or you can wait till the wound heals by applying medicine on it. In case of an anal injury, I will rather advise you to take help of some vet expert than doing this job yourself as there may even be some case of disease related with the dog as well.

2. Seek For Someone’s Help:-

Obviously a dog won’t let you do anything with its private parts if he knows you are doing that and may be if he gets angry, The dog might even make a bite and this I will advise you take some help from another member of your family while doing this. Bring the dog in the bathroom and position it in the standing position with its mouth kept covered with some wire gauze so that the dog may not make a bite. You can even manage to tie its legs for a while or simply ask your friend to take a hold of him by not letting the dog notice what you are doing with him.

3. Finding The Dog Glands:-

Now as you reach the back portion of your dog and hold its tail a side, you will watch out his anal glands that you are to express. You can press up these glands to make them get empty as they might be filled up with liquid. Now you have to milk them upwards and inwards towards its anus such that a normal and slight pressure is only made by your fingers. A fishy smelling liquid will start coming out in slow and safe amounts.

4. Further Approaches:-

Now continue this task till the milking continues and then make the glands empty after milking, wipe it off with some cloth or even water and then wipe it off. Make necessary medications if necessary or if you see the case of extra swelling related with it else if everything goes fine, You can go and feed your dog.
