Knee replacement surgery is an orthopedic process which can never be performed at home and instead you should be a licensed orthopedic surgeon in order to perform it. It requires precise measurements in order to remove the damaged part of your knee bone. The remaining part of the bone is shaped up in order to make an implant. Thus an artificial knee bone is build inside the leg and a realistic kind of joint is made this way. The main approaches followed in this surgery can be described as follows:-
How to Get Knee Replacement Surgery
1. Making an Incision:-
The knee replacement surgery begins with an incision (8-10 inches long in traditional surgery and 4-6 inch long in minimally invasive surgery) made by the surgeon. It is made in the front of knee to have an access of patella. The Patella is also described by the name “Kneecap”.
2. Rotation of Knee Cap:-
The kneecap or patella is then rotated out of the knee area. The surgeon can then have a glimpse of the area which needs to be viewed in order to perform the surgery. The thigh bone is resurfaced then.
3. Resurfacing the Thigh Bone:-
Now there comes the turn to resurface “Femur” or thigh bone. After opening your knee joint, the surgeon takes measurement of your bones and makes cuts with special tools. These measurements are very precise. The damaged bone and cartilage is taken away and the damaged part is then resurfaced.
4. Implantation Procedure for Knee Replacement Surgery:-
The metal formal component is then attached by the surgeon to the end of the thigh bone and it is sealed perfectly with the help of bone fixing cement. The tibia or shin bone is then resurfaced. In this approach, the metal and plastic tibia components are fitted in order to shape-up the bone.
5. Dealing with the Tibial Tray:-
Tibial tray is the bottom part of the implant. This one is fitted to the tibia or shin bone and is fixed using bone cement. The tray is made fix in its place and then medical grade plastic is inserted between the tibial tray and femur component.
6. Adjusting the Patella Again To Its Perfect Position:-
The patella is adjusted again in order to make it come to its normal position. It fits within the plastic component in order to fit properly with the surrounding structure or implant. The plastic piece is affixed with underlying bone using bone fixing cement.
7. The Final Approach:-
The final approach includes the surgeon to bend and fix the knee to make sure that the implant works like it is supposed to work. The sizing, alignment and positioning is considered then and the incision is then affixed making stitches and staples permanently. The bandage is then applied to make you recover. You are allowed to go once the procedure gets made. In some of the cases, surgeon may ask you to stay admitted for some more time in hospital. A proper care of diet is taken and you get back to normal once again.
