You can understand biodiversity as the variations in the life forms found on the planet that we are living in. We see various forms of life living on earth, including the flora, fauna and even the microscopic ones, all these are included in the biodiversity and Thus, you can simply take biodiversity as the calculation of the variations in the organisms that live in an ecosystem and you may calculate it within any area ranging from a measure of some piece of land to even the whole planet that we are living in.

What Resulted In The Formation of Biodiversity?

The Biological researchers say that biodiversity is the result of evolution that took more than 3.5 billion of years to take place. Ever since the earth got formed, and the process of evolution started, the biological life kept on diversifying and there came many biological creatures that lived on earth. There came the stone age, the Jurassic age, the Triassic age and then we humans evolved. Life is suspected to have evolved only a few hundred million years after the formation of the planet Earth that we live in and then the process of evolution kept on diversifying the creatures.

How Did Live Evolve On This Planet?

Well it is believed that there used to be no life on this planet earth except the bacteria, protozoa and
other single celled organisms till 600 million years ago that survived with a single cell unit and multiplied themselves either by the processes like binary fusion or by the means of budding but then there begin a type of shift that we call as an evolution of life and then multicellular organisms came in evolution and there came organisms that were composed of multiple cells rather than the single cells.

Then there came the age when dinosaurs evolved. There came the flying creatures afterwards and if I tell you about an evidence, the Archaeopteryx, which is found to be a dinosaur fossil has been found to have feathers proving that there were some dinosaurs that could fly. The evolution kept on going on like this and then there came the age of mammals who had got mammary glands that could produce milk and that resulted in formation of humans, who got formed after the evolution from apes and that is why it is said that we are ancestors of monkeys.

The life kept on emerging with the life forms that involved the ones that could live in water, that could live on earth, that could live on earth as well as water, the ones that were living but could not move and the ones that used to be microscopic.

Clearing up Your Doubts:-

The land Biodiversity has been found to be the richest in the tropical region and the water or marine biodiversity has been found to be the richest along coasts of the sea. The rapid changes in environment are supposed either to bring about a slowdown in it or it will be that new diversities will evolve that will be totally different from the existing ones, but that will happen after a great time and maybe the other life forms get extinct till then.

There are currently 10-14 million life species on Earth and some amongst them are even endangered and that is the only reason that tigers are standing on the point of extinction with only just 1380 tigers approximately left in India.
